Ukrainian Army receives new tanks, APCs and other hardware

As reported yesterday (7 Dec.) in Ukrainian media, the Ukrainian Army has received several new pieces of equipment courtesy of its domestic defense industry. The hardware includes tanks, armored personnel carriers, helicopters, self-propelled artillery systems and other items. The most modern tanks among the new supplies are apparently the “Bulat” T-64 main battle tanks, an upgrade of the old Soviet T-64. While the equipment is most welcome by an army that is outgunned and outmanned against the Russians, questions have naturally arisen concerning why it has taken this long for the Ukrainian state to deliver arms from its large military-industrial sector to its own armed forces, and why the installment includes none of the “Oplot” T-84 tanks – reputedly the largest and most advanced tanks in the world. The answer (by way of a guess), is that most of Ukraine’s defense production is still allocated to overseas contracts (including to Russia). Ukraine supplies several foreign buyers with its hardware, and is perhaps only now starting to allocate some of this to domestic needs. Here is short text on the supply from the Ukraine Right Now website, including photos from Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s twitter account…
